Mark Eichin posted a photo: New gadget (via kickstarter): “cloudftp” box (terrible name, esp. given that it’s trademarked by someone else Single-purpose embedded-linux box, you power it up, hook a usb-storage device to it, and it publishes it via http and ftp over an ad-hoc wireless network. In theory, this means I could actually pull pictures from my camera to my phone *while offline in the Red Line tunnels* and caption them, posting to flickr after we “come up for air” past Kendall… In practice, the web site it exposes looks ok on an iPad and completely fails to work on the Android browser (or Mobile Firefox) and I haven’t figured out how to set an ftp password (standard anonftp didn’t work.) Nicely pocketable box, builtin rechargable battery should be good for a couple of hours. It’s thicker than the phone, but thinner than a paperback. Supposedly the firmware is upgradable, so they can fix the web site; I haven’t figured out how to put in my *own* firmware, because it was a useful box at the price even without that, but I’ll be looking for those details soon.
